Goal of Strategic Initiatives

This document proposes strategic initiatives that have been developed by the Strategic Planning Committee of the `Olelo Board of Directors and `Olelo management. Its purpose is to provide a plan that staff can use to develop a work strategy and evaluation tools that can be used to measure whether the organization is achieving goals that will ultimately serve to fulfill `Oleloís mission, which is to:

- promote lifelong learning through the creation, production and cablecasting of programs that are aimed at the preservation, development and enhancement of the diversity of thought, culture and heritage on O`ahu;

- facilitate communication through electronic media technology for community empowerment; and

- increase civic participation in the democratic process by promoting understanding and informed use of electronic media.

Each strategic initiative has been broken down into key elements, which will additionally serve as a basis for developing evaluation tools to assess whether goals are being met. As 2001 is the first year of this plan, the rest of this year will be spent developing data to establish a baseline of information. Beginning with year two, starting in 2002, this data will be used to establish target numbers and indicators that will be used for the balance of the five year period. The strategic initiatives are listed in order of priority, with outcomes from the third and fourth initiatives becoming more tangible and measurable in later years, after the first initiatives have been implemented.

This document will serve as a working plan that is intended to be reviewed and updated on an ongoing basis. It will provide a basis for evaluation to determine how effectively `Olelo is meeting its goals.

Many mahalos to the individuals on the `Olelo Board and staff who have put a great deal of thought and energy into this plan.

Strategic Initiative 1. Diversity of Voices
To achieve strong representation in the creation of programming from all groups in the community which leads to issues being addressed, community connectivity and positive change

Strategic Goal 1.A. Variety of Methods to Access Resources
`Olelo provides access to its resources through a variety of methods to increase participation in the creation of programming by and for the community

Possible Approaches
Provide accessible and user friendly locations
Providing quality user friendly production equipment
Develop a base of motivated and skilled volunteers
Provide training that nurtures and motivates clients to improve
Develop methods to take services and resources in the community
Assess effectiveness

Strategic Goal 1.B. Demographic Diversity of Clientele
`Olelo participants reflect the diversity of the community

Possible Approaches
Assess diversity of clientele
Eliminate barriers to services and programs
Conduct targeted outreach to increase diversity
Provide easily accessible services
Develop a pool of volunteer producers who aid in increasing diversity

To build diversity of thought by ensuring exposure to a diversity issues facing our community

Strategic Goal 2.A. Program Content Valued by Community
Programming is valued by community because it connects viewers to their community by reflecting the diversity of causes and issues

Possible Approaches
Assess diversity of programming
Address community needs and interest based on research
Encourage and support producers to improve program effectiveness and value their audience
Provide services and programs that improve the look of the channels
Inform viewers/community of the programming available on the channels

 

Strategic Initiative 3. Informed and Engaged Community and Viewers
Build increasing civic participation in community issues as people realize they can influence change

Strategic Goal 3.A. Positive Awareness of `Olelo
`Olelo is broadly recognized as a valuable resource to the community

Possible Approaches
Develop effective community awareness via promotion of `Oleloís mission, Services and programs
Ensure effective `Olelo presence in the community
Ensure key constituents awareness of `Olelo mission and accomplishments
Provide positive `Olelo experience

Strategic Goal 3.B. Community Catalyst
`Olelo serves as a catalyst and resource for increased diversity and positive change in the community

Possible Approaches
Assess community needs, interests, and concerns
Work with community leaders to view `Olelo as a catalyst for achieving their goals
Stimulate community interest and dialogue
Develop partnerships
Build a volunteer base to address timely issues
Encourage creation of programs in response to community needs
Stimulate pro-active viewership

 

Strategic Initiative 4. Building Community
To engage individuals in addressing issues and creating positive change by increasing shared understanding and realization of their impact on each other

Strategic Goal 4.A. Networking Communities
`Olelo fosters community connectivity through the programming on the cable access channels

Possible Approaches
Collaboratively assess programming impact on stimulating community involvement
Assist in the creation of networks between communities previously fragmented
Develop program schedules and promotion that support networking
