All of this is created and aired as a community services, for your benefit as a resident of O'ahu.
What We Do 'Olelo provides free access to video production equipment, studio space, edit facilities and air time for persons interested in delivering non-commercial messages to their community via television. With a supportive staff, we try our best to maintain and deliver equipment and services that link you to production and broadcast needs that serve you and your community. Whether you need to reserve equipment, schedule air time, use our Easy Access services or train with us, 'Olelo encourages you to express your views through the powerful medium of television. We support individuals and community groups, non-profit organizations, the educational and government sectors by helping them get the word out about who they are and how they serve the community. Video Production Training is available to acquaint those that have no formal video background with methods to produce, direct, run camera and edit programs to be aired on our channels. We offer a variety of inexpensive classes to help you understand what you need to know or to further your skills as an Access user. 'Olelo also offers other facilitated services, what we refer to as Easy Access to help those who may not want to train in production but still have need for Access services. To name a few, we offer open mic forums such as O'ahu Speaks as well as the Mini Studio and Giving Aloha. You provide the message... we handle the equipment, giving voice to your ideas and opinions with no technical barriers. Along with airing a wide variety of programs ranging from arts and entertainment to sports and recreation, activism and advocacy to inspirational and avant garde, we also regularly televise Neighborhood Board meetings, City Council hearings and legislative discussions. We promote programing by and for Native Hawaians and other indigenous peoples, and we make available channel space for learning programs and other educational matter supplied by the State Department of Education and the University of Hawai'i.
How We're Funded `Olelo receives its primary funding directly from Oceanic Cable. This funding relationship was established as part of the State's negotiation with Oceanic Cable's long term franchise on O`ahu. These funds are not collected as a tax on state residents. The state does allow Oceanic to pass the cost related to PEG access funding on to its subscribers. These franchise fees collected from subscribers monthly bills do not only fund PEG access. These funds are also distributed to the Hawaii Public Television Foundation (KHET) and the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs to cover cost related to regulating cable television.
